After Jeff retired from the Air Force, We had a dream of opening a facility for veterans. We started with plans drawn on restaurant napkins. We began with, no kidding, hand held loppers cutting down the small trees to give the horses space, then did a multi-phase, multi-year land clearing project for pastures. Each phase exposed what the land looked like and back to dinner we went, revamping restaurant napkin drawings of previous plans because of the unexpected. Other veterans weighed in on our plans, shuffled the layout and the mission.
Organically Tailwinds Ranch developed. Do we know what the final product looks like? No, and we now see that as a positive. By not having absolute expectations we are able to focus on positive growth in any direction. Life happens; rain happens; health changes; incredible people impact and change us; our kids grow, marry, and expand their world; we worked multiple jobs and came home to till, fertilize, seed, clean, deal with mud, and draw out new plans; new stressors pop up; all shaping our plan and mission.
God's timeline, not ours, and we and Tailwinds, grew at each step.
The F-16 Attitude Indicator
Sometimes we put ourselves in a situation or circumstance, or outside forces put us in a position that we can’t see, can’t accept, can’t understand right now. And then in a flash, we see that up is down, and down is up. That what we thought was reality is completely different from what we thought a minute ago. It happens from time to time when we are flying. So what do we do when we see that up is down and down is up? Recognize, Confirm, Recover. Recognize that what we thought was real is not. No matter what our body or brain is telling us.
Confirm the new reality. Cross-check some trusted other sources and now understand what the new reality looks like. Recover. Don’t spend any time dwelling on the old version of reality or how we got there. Take positive steps to right the world and adapt to the new reality of the situation. Pilots live or die by the mantra “Recognize. Confirm. Recover.” Tailwinds Ranch focuses on developing and teaching skills to recognize the reality of the situations that life brings. To help confirm the new reality through a set of coping skills that can lead to recovery. Our logo is based on the Flying W in the Attitude Indicator of an F-16. It helps us to remember that recovery begins with the recognition that sometimes the reality we feel is not in fact the reality. That we need to change our perception and use skills that allow us to function in the new reality, shared with a better understanding of everything around us
